A researcher adds a competitive inhibitor to an enzyme reaction and reruns a Lineweaver-Burk analysis. Compared to the uninhibited reaction, what happens to the enzyme’s apparent Km and Vmax?

Correct answer: C. A competitive inhibitor competes with substrate for the active site, so more substrate overcomes it at saturation. Vmax is unchanged, but it takes a higher substrate concentration to get there, so apparent Km rises.Most students pick B because they attach “the inhibitor makes the enzyme worse” to the wrong variable.
